In The Longest Journey, Wagnerian operas (Tristan und Isolde and Das Rheingold) and the philosophy of Schopenhauer present a somber vision of life. In Maurice, Tchaikovsky’s Pathétique Symphony and the dialogues of Plato imply homosexual themes.
