内容記述 | The current study presents the idea that a new method of communication develops with an introduction of a new technology, and the way it does so is culture-specific. It explores how the use of emoticons in electronic texts has been progressing, with special focus on the Japanese Language. Electronic writers seem to have similar motivation for using emoticons regardless of their native languages, such as the desires to show their attitudes and emphasize their propositions. However, closer look at individual emoticons both with and without context reveals that they are influenced by a number of aspects unique to the Japanese language and culture, which include the orthography, comics, and idioms. | |||||
