GenAI offers real-time, personalized feedback that teachers, particularly with large classes, cannot always effectively provide. This study represents the initial stages of an action research project focused on material development for implementing ChatGPT in an EFL communication classroom to support individualized English pronunciation feedback. Sixteen Japanese EFL learners at approximately the CEFR A2 level participated in this study. The results of the investigation suggest that ChatGPT is a potentially effective tool for awareness raising for phonetic, word, and sentential level error correction, and that students enjoyed using the program. Reported challenges using ChatGPT included a difficult onboarding process, over-generalized feedback, and over-praising.
