| 内容記述 | The present study verifies the validity of hapax legomena (token frequency 1) for morphological analysis. Nominal, verbal, and adjectival hapaxes (e.g. wave-watcher, arthropodize, throw-backable) are extracted from the British National Corpus (BNC) and then they are examined in morphological, semantic, and discursive perspectives. The BNC research demonstrates three kinds of validity: first, hapaxes can be an objective barometer that shows the creative aspects of word formation. A productivity measure for affixation is proposed, which gives a key role to hapaxes. Secondly, hapaxes can be a detector of context-dependent word formation. They typically indicate that words are created in discourse by the combination of surrounding syntactic materials. Lastly, hapaxes have important theoretical implications. High creativity of major word formation processes supports generative morphology, context-related word creation bucks up the antilexicalism (“out-of-the-lexicon” word formation), and it may produce novel words inconsistent with morphological and semantic restrictions to trigger the lasting relaxation of the restrictions. | |||||||
