内容記述 | The current paper aims to capture linguistic variables that contribute to describing the idiosyncrasy of spontaneous speech. A ninety-minute conversation between two Japanese students residing in the United States is recorded, and parts of the conversation are transcribed and scrutinized for close examination. The study finds two phonological (vowel insertion and intensifier sugoi), two lexical (“nonce borrowing” and nonstandard toka), two morphological/syntactic (the use of English other than nouns/noun phrases and the distal style), and two pragmatic variables (discourse markers mitai na and nanka) worthy of attention. The rationale behind the use of each variable is discussed, and it is hoped to demonstrate some of the characteristics of a constantly alternating natural language and its mechanism. | |||||||
